For the Generations Thrilling 30 series we have the Predacon second in command Sky-byte.
Originally part of the (2001?) series, Transformers: Robots In Disguise (or RID)
I passed on the original Sky-byte figure back in the early 2000’s bc he was a repaint of the Maximal Transmetal II figure Cybershark, which I already own, and was never fond of that design. So he was a pass for me.
Fast forward now to 2014 I decided I liked this version of Sky-byte, and I was not disappointed.
I really like the figure.
Design wise, he’s clearly an update of the original Cybershark/Sky-byte mold. And not only has Sky-byte remained the same class size (Mega class = Voyager class), he’s also quite tall for a modern voyager class, taller than the original.
The robot mode is super fun. His shoulder might be a little loose, and he sometimes feels hollow too, but that’s the status que these days for Transformers toys. But I don’t like he’s going to break at any moment; not like Generations Rattrap.
His left arm is not only his missile weapon, but it also has a spinning feature, which is really fun.
Transformation is a little fiddly, (but so is the Cybershark mold), their are panels which need to be locked into place, and sometimes that can be a bother.
Beast mode is really cool. He’s molded in a permanent arcing form, as if Sky-byte is swimming (or flying). He feels more solid than in robot mode.
My only real complaint about Sky-byte is that the spring in his missile launcher is broken, or something. The missile locks into place, however it will not fire. I don’t really care about that, but that does count as a quality control issue. Also his missile is yellow, and I really think it should be blue. His attack is called the ‘Tsunami Blaster’ after all.
If you were a fan of the RID line (the original RID line), or are a beast formers fan, get Sky-byte.
I am loving the fact that we fans are getting Maximals and Predacons for the Trilling 30 line. Even though Sky-byte isn’t from a Beast Wars series, he’s a fun figure to either add to your BW collection, or your RID collection.
